Sturgeon Bay Prepares for 26th Annual Harvest Fest Featuring Street Art Auction, Classic Cars, and Waterfront Celebrations

As the post-Labor Day calendar transitions Door County into the heart of September 2026, the peninsula is embarking on its seasonal slate of autumn gatherings. The mid-September period marks the commencement of regional harvest activities, laying the groundwork for the major cultural and community festivals scheduled throughout October across the county.

At the center of the upcoming weekend lineup is Sturgeon Bay, where Destination Sturgeon Bay is staging its 26th annual Harvest Fest on Friday, Sept. 18, and Saturday, Sept. 19. The two-day community gathering combines fine art, automotive history, waterfront hospitality, and traditional downtown entertainment into a multifaceted celebration of local heritage.

A cornerstone of the festival is the culmination of the citywide summer street art initiative, titled "Set Sail in Sturgeon Bay." Designed to honor the community’s storied maritime past, this year’s public installation features 28 distinct artificial boat sails. Regional artists spent months painting, embellishing, and reimagining both sides of the structures before they were positioned across the east and west sides of the downtown district for seasonal public viewing.

The 2026 sail motif follows a long line of themed outdoor art programs organized by the city. In past seasons, Sturgeon Bay’s thoroughfares have showcased artistic renderings of local fauna and regional iconography, including sturgeon, lighthouses, cherries, bass, and customized Adirondack-style deck chairs known locally as "Chair-ies." Among the notable works featured this season is "Just Bee ...," an embellished sail designed by artist Natalie Townsend that spent the summer displayed outside Novel Bay Booksellers.

The public art pieces are set to find permanent homes through a digital silent auction managed via the Handbid platform. Prospective buyers and art patrons can inspect photos of the works and place bids through links hosted on the Destination Sturgeon Bay Harvest Fest website. Bidding on all 28 decorative sails is scheduled to officially conclude on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 5:30 p.m.

To provide community members and collectors with deeper insight into the creative process, organizers have established a new Friday afternoon reception on Sept. 18. Taking place from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Door County Granary along the West Side waterfront, the event will feature appearances by several of the contributing creators, along with on-site artist interviews. The full collection of sails will be arranged for close-up viewing along the adjacent waterfront promenade.

The Friday evening waterfront schedule at the Granary also incorporates family-oriented recreation and hospitality. Visitors attending the art gathering can purchase beer, wine, and food items from the on-site Granary Wharf Cafe, while complimentary rides on an outdoor Ferris wheel will operate along the water from 5 to 8 p.m.

Automotive enthusiasts will also see an updated format for the opening night of the festival. The Old Bolts Car Club is introducing a Cruise-In Meet & Greet on Friday, Sept. 18, beginning at 5 p.m. at The Lodge at Leathem Smith, located at 1640 Memorial Drive. The gathering, complete with available food and bar service, takes the place of the club's traditional "Cruise By the Bay" evening motorcade through the downtown corridor.

The Friday meet-and-greet sets the stage for the Old Bolts Car Club’s 20th annual Harvest Fest Car Show on Saturday, Sept. 19. Expected to draw more than 100 antique, classic, and customized vehicles, the automotive exhibition will occupy South Third Avenue between Michigan and Quincy streets throughout the day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Vehicle owners interested in participating can register directly at the intersection of South Third Avenue and Nebraska Street between 8 a.m. and noon for an entry fee of $15. The official opening ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. with a color guard presentation of the American colors alongside a rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner," followed by an afternoon awards presentation at 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, traditional Oktoberfest customs will anchor Saturday's downtown street schedule outside Starboard Brewing Co. on North Third Avenue. Festivities begin promptly at noon with the ceremonial "Tapping of the Oktoberfest Firkin," a specialty craft beer barrel opening officiated by Sturgeon Bay Mayor David Ward.

Following the noon tapping ceremony, the brewpub will host a series of interactive endurance and novelty contests in the street. The adult steinholding competition begins at 1 p.m., challenging participants to maintain an outstretched arm while supporting a full glass stein of beer.

Youth attendees will have an opportunity to compete at 2 p.m. in a dedicated root beer holding contest structured under similar rules. The street competitions will conclude at 3 p.m. with the "Beer Puppeteer" challenge, a dexterity game requiring contenders to manipulate a string-rigged, puppet-like apparatus to successfully drink from a cup.

With additional Saturday activities broadening the footprint around the West Side waterfront and the Door County Granary, the weekend slate provides a comprehensive showcase of local culture, arts, and seasonal customs as Door County transitions into its autumn peak.
