The Powerball jackpot has rolled over once again after no ticket matched all six winning numbers during the Monday, Sept. 14 drawing. While the top prize remained unclaimed, lottery officials confirmed that multiple players secured major secondary payouts, including one lucky ticket holder in Ohio who took home a multimillion-dollar prize.
During the Sept. 14 drawing, the grand prize had climbed to an estimated $253 million, which carried a one-time cash value option of $107.4 million. The winning white ball numbers drawn were 19, 20, 57, 61, and 67, paired with the red Powerball number 22. The Power Play multiplier for the drawing was selected at 2X.
Although the grand prize went untouched, substantial prizes were claimed across the country. In Georgia, one player successfully matched all five white balls to secure a standard second-tier prize of $1 million. In Ohio, another ticket holder also matched all five white numbers and had purchased the optional Power Play feature, doubling the prize payout to a total of $2 million.
Because no player matched the complete sequence necessary to take down the top prize, the jackpot has increased for the upcoming drawing on Wednesday, Sept. 16. Lottery officials estimate the next grand prize will reach approximately $271 million, providing a single lump-sum cash payout option of $115.1 million before applicable taxes.
Powerball drawings follow a regular schedule three times per week, taking place every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday night at 11 p.m. Eastern Time. The continuous cycle of drawings allows prize pools to accumulate quickly whenever multiple drawings pass without a jackpot winner.
Alongside the primary game, the Sept. 14 drawing included the Double Play feature. The winning numbers selected for the Double Play drawing were 12, 23, 48, 61, and 67, with a red Powerball of 8. Double Play is an optional add-on available in select states that gives participants a second opportunity to win prizes, including a top award of up to $10 million.
A standard Powerball play costs $2 per line. For an extra $1 per play, participants can add the Power Play feature, which multiplies non-jackpot cash prizes by the drawn multiplier number. Players in certain jurisdictions, such as Indiana and Kentucky, can also choose to add the Double Play feature for an additional $1.
To enter a drawing, participants must select five distinct numbers from a pool ranging from 1 to 69 for the white balls, followed by a single number from 1 to 26 for the red Powerball. Players have the option to manually fill out their selections on a paper play slip or choose a quick pick, which allows the lottery computer terminal to generate numbers randomly.
Powerball tickets are widely available at authorized retail locations across 45 participating U.S. states, including Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, as well as in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Standard sales points include gas stations, convenience stores, and supermarkets, though ticket sales close anywhere from one to two hours before the 11 p.m. drawing depending on the rules of each individual jurisdiction.
Participation is open to a broad audience, as players are not required to be United States citizens or residents to buy tickets and claim winnings. Anyone who meets the legal age requirements within a participating jurisdiction can play and redeem valid winning tickets.
In addition to traditional brick-and-mortar retail locations, digital purchasing options have expanded. Residents in Kentucky can buy tickets directly on the internet through the Kentucky Lottery website. Meanwhile, players located in Ohio and Indiana can order Powerball entries through Jackpocket, which serves as the official digital lottery courier partner of the USA TODAY Network.
A growing number of state lotteries also sell tickets to their residents directly via their official online portals. The jurisdictions offering official online sales include Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C.
The overall odds of winning the Powerball jackpot stand at 1 in 292.2 million. For matching all five white balls without the Powerball, the odds are 1 in 11.7 million. Matching four white balls plus the red Powerball yields a $50,000 base prize with odds of approximately 1 in 913,000, while matching four white balls alone results in a $100 payout with odds of about 1 in 36,000.
Additional lower-tier prizes provide multiple avenues for players to win smaller cash amounts. Matching three white balls plus the Powerball awards $100 at odds of roughly 1 in 14,500. A $7 prize is awarded for matching three white balls (odds of 1 in ~580) or matching two white balls plus the Powerball (odds of 1 in ~700). The lowest prize tier awards $4 to players who match one white ball plus the Powerball (odds of 1 in ~92) or the Powerball alone, which carries winning odds of approximately 1 in 38.
