Washington State Urges Caution as School Buses Return to the Roads

As students across Washington state prepare for another year of academic pursuits, local school districts are reinforcing the importance of safety with a critical reminder: drivers must adhere strictly to rules regarding school bus stop signs.

With the return of the school year, transportation teams are working diligently to ensure the safety of students boarding and disembarking buses. In a survey conducted by the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS), over 101,334 school bus drivers from 40 states, including 3,419 in Washington, participated, highlighting the significance of this effort.

Washington's Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) reports that during a single-day survey, school bus drivers in Washington documented 960 illegal passes. Extrapolating this figure over the course of an entire 180-day school year could equate to more than 172,000 violations.

It is mandatory by law in Washington state to stop for school buses when they are flashing red lights or displaying a retractable stop sign. The scenarios are as follows: on a two-lane road, drivers in both directions must stop. On roads with three or more marked lanes, only drivers traveling in the opposite direction are required to stop, with the same rule applying to highways divided into separate roadways. However, drivers traveling in the same direction as the bus must always stop.

Failure to adhere to these rules carries a significant penalty. Drivers who illegally pass a stopped school bus face a mandatory fine of $500, which cannot be waived, reduced, or suspended. The law is designed to prioritize the safety of students, who are among the most vulnerable road users during the school day.

The Gastonia Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies are reminding drivers to be vigilant and cautious, especially in areas with high volumes of school traffic. The department has shared visual aids to help illustrate the correct response to school bus stop signs on both two-lane and multi-lane roads.

Educational initiatives are also being launched to raise awareness about the importance of bus stop safety. Local schools and community groups are participating in campaigns aimed at ensuring that both drivers and students understand the risks associated with illegal passing.

In addition to the legal and safety implications, illegal passing can have severe consequences for children. The sudden stop and high speeds involved in these maneuvers can result in serious injuries or fatalities.

As the new school year unfolds, the message is clear: all drivers must prioritize safety and adhere to the rules regarding school bus stops. The collaboration between law enforcement, school transportation teams, and local communities is crucial in creating a safe environment for students as they embark on their educational journey.
