Grand Canyon Tragedy: Over 20 Missing After Devastating Flash Flood

####

A catastrophic flash flood in Grand Canyon National Park has left over 20 people missing or unaccounted for, as authorities race against time to locate survivors and recover the missing. The disaster struck on Saturday when a sudden downpour unleashed a torrent of mud and debris through the park's Bright Angel Canyon.

The National Park Service (NPS) reported that the intense thunderstorms, which dumped over an inch of rain in just an hour, caused significant damage to the park's infrastructure. The floodwaters rose alarmingly, exceeding five feet in just 10 minutes, and washed away bridges across Bright Angel Creek. One of the park's most challenging trails, the North Kaibab Trail, was forced to close, leaving hikers and campers stranded.

As of Sunday afternoon, the NPS confirmed that 62 campers and hikers had been airlifted out of the affected area. However, the search for the missing individuals continues, with the NPS coordinating efforts with the Arizona Department of Public Safety. The agency is urging anyone with information about hikers or backpackers in the inner canyon along the Bright Angel Creek corridor on August 29 to come forward.

The closure of Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground, and the North Kaibab Trail has been extended, along with the shutdown of the Colorado River to traffic due to debris in the waterway. The Black Bridge and Silver Bridge, which cross the Colorado River, have also been closed.

Park officials warn that additional closures may be necessary as the threat of more thunderstorms and heavy rainfall persists. Cell phone service in the area is already spotty, with the NPS noting that it is "nearly impossible" to maintain a signal in much of Northern Arizona.

The flash flood comes a year after the Dragon Bravo Fire ravaged the Grand Canyon's North Rim, destroying a historic lodge and altering the landscape. The intense rain on recently burned areas can trigger debris flows, a mix of mud, trees, and rocks that can be deadly.

The National Weather Service has issued a slight risk of excessive rainfall capable of triggering flash flooding across the Four Corners region on Monday, with a moderate risk in south-central Utah. Short-duration rain bursts, like the thunderstorms that caused the recent flood, are more likely to trigger debris flows than long-duration moderate rainfall.

The Grand Canyon's stunning natural beauty has long been a draw for tourists and adventurers, but this tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable and dangerous forces that nature can unleash. As the search for the missing continues, the nation holds its breath, hoping for the safe return of all those affected by this devastating flash flood.
