Louisville Commuters Face Monthlong Broadway Closure Beneath I-65 as Major Overpass Demolition Begins

Downtown Louisville drivers are facing significant travel disruptions as construction crews begin dismantling an interstate overpass, forcing a key corridor to shut down for several weeks. Officials overseeing the I-65 Central Corridor Project have closed the section of Broadway directly underneath Interstate 65, creating a major detour pattern that is expected to remain in effect through at least the beginning of October.

The temporary roadway shutdown is necessary to allow work crews to safely execute the demolition and eventual replacement of the aging overpass overhead. Transportation authorities have put dedicated detour routes in place, urging motorists who work or travel in the downtown area to plan ahead, leave extra time for their morning and evening commutes, and strictly observe all posted directional signs.

In addition to the primary shutdown on Broadway, adjacent roadways are experiencing significant restrictions. The portion of Gray Street situated underneath the Interstate 65 structure has also been barred to all motorized vehicular traffic through early October. However, project officials noted that pedestrian passage will continue to be accommodated along Gray Street throughout the active construction window.

To help manage the flow of traffic around the core work zone, state and local traffic managers have established specific detour paths for both eastbound and westbound motorists traveling along Broadway. Westbound drivers will be routed away from the construction zone starting at South Preston Street. From there, vehicles must turn south onto East Breckinridge Street, proceed west over to South Second Street, and then travel north along Second Street to reconnect with Broadway.

Eastbound travelers along Broadway face a corresponding diversion through nearby city streets. Drivers heading east will be directed to turn south at South First Street, continue down toward East College Street, travel over to East Brook Street, and then proceed north along Brook Street until they are safely guided back onto Broadway on the other side of the interstate structure.

Drivers should also anticipate overnight disruptions on the interstate itself as heavy equipment works in the area. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet confirmed that localized lane closures will occur on Interstate 65 between Jacob and Floyd streets. These interstate restrictions are scheduled to take place nightly between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. from September 13 through September 18.

A central priority for transportation planners during the ongoing construction has been maintaining uninterrupted emergency and visitor access to the downtown medical center. Project leaders confirmed that direct routes to local hospitals will stay open despite the simultaneous closures on Broadway and Gray Street, ensuring that emergency services, patients, and healthcare staff can reach medical facilities without facing blocked approaches.

Specific navigation guidelines have been issued for general motorists exiting the highway near the medical corridor. Commuters traveling on northbound Interstate 65 who exit at Broadway and are not seeking care or visiting a medical facility are instructed to turn right onto Broadway and proceed northward into the downtown core by using Clay Street.

Officials have explicitly asked the general public to help prevent gridlock around medical facilities by staying away from surrounding surface streets. In a public statement, transportation leaders advised drivers heading to destinations outside the downtown medical district to utilize alternative routes across the city and deliberately avoid the nearby stretches of Brook Street, Floyd Street, and Chestnut Street.

The dismantling of the Broadway overpass is part of a much wider modernization campaign taking place across Louisville's urban interstate network. The overpass is one of six different bridge structures scheduled for complete replacement across the city through 2027 as regional infrastructure is systematically upgraded.

State officials emphasized that they do not plan to shut down the entirety of the Interstate 65 corridor for this phase of the work. That decision follows an extensive project earlier in summer 2026, when a five-mile stretch of the interstate was completely shut down for approximately two months to accommodate major regional repairs.

Even after the Broadway overpass demolition is completed, drivers in the Louisville metropolitan area will face protracted construction timelines in the coming years. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear announced on September 10 that a one-mile segment of Interstate 65 near downtown Louisville will be narrowed down to a single lane of traffic. That prolonged lane reduction is scheduled to begin around May 2027 and run through late 2028.

The current closure on Broadway comes after an initial delay in the project schedule. Transportation officials had originally slated the Broadway shutdown beneath Interstate 65 to begin on August 26. However, that start date was pushed back after nearby road closures sparked severe traffic bottlenecks throughout the area.

In particular, construction closures along Muhammad Ali Boulevard and Brook Street contributed to heavy congestion near University of Louisville hospital facilities. Recognizing the strain on local traffic flow, transportation officials temporarily postponed the Broadway demolition to evaluate traffic conditions and make critical modifications to the regional detour network.

With those detour adjustments finalized, the "long-term" closures on Muhammad Ali Boulevard and Brook Street remain actively in place alongside the new Broadway restrictions. Commuters traveling through downtown Louisville are encouraged to stay alert to evolving road conditions and ongoing lane shifts as the central corridor overhaul progresses through October and into subsequent phases.
