James Talarico Rallies in Houston to Consolidate Key Black Voter Support in Tight Texas Senate Race

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico brought his weekend campaign swing across Houston to a close on Sunday with a high-profile rally at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, one of the city's prominent Black congregations. The Austin state lawmaker is making a concerted push to mobilize Black voters whose turnout could prove pivotal in his closely contested race against Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Addressing several hundred attendees inside the Third Ward megachurch sanctuary, Talarico delivered a message centered heavily on economic affordability, community investment, and political unity. The gathering brought together a diverse audience as the Democratic nominee seeks to build momentum heading into the critical final stretch of the statewide campaign.

Public opinion surveys indicate that Talarico and Paxton remain locked in a neck-and-neck contest, elevating the importance of every core constituency. With Black Texans historically serving as the most reliable voting bloc for Texas Democrats, high turnout and deep enthusiasm within these communities are widely regarded as essential for Talarico to secure a statewide victory in November.

The event at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church formed part of an ongoing effort by Talarico to heal internal party divisions and close ground following a fiercely contested primary battle against U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett. Pre-primary polling showed that roughly 80% of Black voters supported the Dallas congresswoman, who had garnered strong backing from influential Black leaders across Texas and has not yet joined Talarico on the campaign trail for the general election.

Speaking directly to the congregation on Sunday, Talarico emphasized that he has no intention of taking Black voters for granted, reminding the audience that Texas is home to the largest Black population of any state in the nation. He stressed that direct community engagement must remain a continuous priority rather than an afterthought reserved exclusively for election season.

"That work of representing Black Texans doesn't start the day after Election Day, it starts now," Talarico told the crowd. "That is why we are listening to, investing in and showing up for Black communities all over this state."

To back up his campaign promises, Talarico has dedicated a substantial portion of his campaign resources specifically toward outreach in Black communities. The campaign has committed more than $25 million of its overall $70 million war chest to fund targeted engagement efforts and grassroots mobilization throughout the state.

As part of this strategic push, Talarico's campaign recently established a dedicated Black voter engagement team led by three veteran political operatives. In addition, the campaign has contracted with three Black-owned consulting firms, including two based in the Houston area, to help guide messaging, field operations, and local outreach strategies.

The Sunday rally capped off an active, multi-stop weekend in the Houston area designed to increase Talarico's visibility. On Saturday, the candidate hosted a community back-to-school giveaway at historic Emancipation Park alongside renowned Houston hip-hop figure DJ OG Ron C. Earlier on Sunday morning, he attended services at The Church Without Walls, another major predominantly Black megachurch located in the Cypress area.

Several prominent local Democratic candidates took to the stage to introduce Talarico and voice their support for his platform. Among the speakers was Staci Childs, the Democratic candidate seeking to succeed state Rep. Alma Allen in House District 131. Childs told the audience that Talarico has demonstrated a genuine willingness to listen to community needs and incorporate local voices before making major decisions.

Other candidates who participated in introducing Talarico included Harris County judge nominee Letitia Plummer and Tyler Smith, the Democratic contender challenging incumbent Republican state Rep. Lacey Hull in House District 138. Their presence underscored efforts by Texas Democrats to project a united front up and down the ballot across Harris County.

Sunday's welcoming atmosphere marked a contrast to Talarico’s previous on-the-ground outreach in Houston in July, during which a town hall featured a public confrontation with an activist who accused him of dismissing Black Texans. Attendees at Sunday's rally noted that while initial post-primary outreach required navigating difficult topics, Talarico has demonstrated persistence in hearing out voter concerns.

Bresean Cockrell, a 44-year-old attendee, recalled being impressed by Talarico’s willingness to listen during tough exchanges with neighbors in Sunnyside earlier in the summer. Cockrell explained that while those conversations were at times uncomfortable, they were essential for building trust, adding that he believed the candidate genuinely wants to work toward solutions. Other attendees who previously backed Crockett in the primary similarly affirmed that Talarico now has their full support against Paxton.

Throughout his 15-minute address, Talarico kept his policy focus anchored to the rising cost of everyday living as volunteers distributed signs reading "Make Life Affordable Again." Denouncing the steep costs of gasoline and groceries, Talarico framed the Senate race as a contest between working- and middle-class families against entrenched billionaire interests, while generating his loudest applause when drawing sharp contrasts between his campaign and Paxton's record.
