New Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion: Second North Trestle Bridge Now Open

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel expansion project has reached a significant milestone with the opening of the second North Trestle bridge. The newly constructed westbound bridge marks a significant advancement in the multi-year project, designed to alleviate traffic congestion and improve the transportation infrastructure in the Hampton Roads region.

Located in Hampton, Virginia, the second North Trestle bridge was officially opened to the public, offering drivers heading west on Interstate 64 a new traffic pattern coming out of the tunnel towards Hampton. This development is a crucial part of the expansion project, which began with the opening of the eastbound North Trestle bridge in May 2024.

The original bridge, built between 1957 and 1972, provided a vital link between the cities of Hampton and Newport News. However, as traffic demands increased over the years, the existing structures could no longer accommodate the growing volume of vehicles. The new expansion project aims to address these challenges and improve the overall traffic flow.

The innovative beam launcher technology used in the construction of the new bridge was instrumental in placing over half the girders required for the substructure without impacting adjacent travel lanes. This innovative approach minimized disruptions to the ongoing traffic, ensuring a smooth transition for commuters.

The new structure has been reinforced with over 2 million pounds of corrosion-resistant stainless steel, providing it with increased durability and longevity. Standing at a towering 33 feet at its highest point, the bridge has also been designed to minimize salt spray exposure, an important consideration given its location near the coast.

Engineered for a 100-year service life, the HRBT expansion project features modern expansion joints beneath the driving surface. These joints allow the new bridge decks to expand and contract more efficiently with seasonal temperature changes, reducing the risk of future damage.

The completion of the westbound North Trestle bridge is a major milestone for the project. To date, it has involved the driving of 262 piles, the installation of 185 girders, the placement of 46 bent caps, and the pouring of more than 8,000 cubic yards of concrete. This level of progress demonstrates the extensive efforts and resources that have been dedicated to the expansion project.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the opening of the westbound North Trestle bridge will enable crews to demolish the two original structures. This comes after the completion of all new eastbound lanes, and the continuation of a series of landside westbound traffic shifts in Norfolk this summer.

The expansion project is part of a broader initiative to improve transportation in the region, enhance public safety, and promote economic development. As the project continues to unfold, it is expected to bring significant benefits to the residents and businesses of Hampton Roads.

The opening of the second North Trestle bridge marks a major victory for the VDOT and the construction team behind the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel expansion. It represents the culmination of years of planning, design, and construction work, and sets the stage for the final phases of the project.

As the expansion project moves forward, the new bridge is poised to provide a more efficient and reliable transportation option for the thousands of commuters who travel through the Hampton Roads area daily. With the continued support of the VDOT and the community, the project is expected to achieve its goals of improving transportation infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for area residents.
