The Emerging Trend of 'Pheromone-Maxxing' Among Gen Z Men

In a society where personal grooming is often seen as a cornerstone of self-presentation, a new trend has emerged among some Gen Z men, challenging traditional notions of hygiene and attraction. Known as "pheromone-maxxing," this phenomenon is gaining traction on platforms like TikTok, as young men experiment with embracing their natural scent in the name of attracting potential partners.

The term "pheromone-maxxing" refers to the practice of not showering or using deodorant to enhance one's natural musk, theoretically making oneself more attractive to the opposite sex. One TikTok user shared their experience, noting, "Stopped washing my hair at all and now I unironically get more compliments on how it smells and looks (from women). Pheromone maxxing is key."

While the trend may seem counterintuitive, it draws on a kernel of scientific truth: the idea that humans produce individual chemical odors and that scent can influence how we perceive others. However, psychologists and dermatologists caution that the science does not support the notion that skipping showers will make an individual more desirable to potential partners.

Dr. Shereen Teymour, a board-certified dermatologist in New York, explains, "Pheromone-maxxing takes a kernel of legitimate science and stretches it into a conclusion the science doesn't support." She adds that while humans do produce chemical odors, there is no evidence to suggest that these odors play a role in romantic attraction.

The trend has its roots in the "looksmaxxing" community, which advocates for extreme methods to achieve physical attractiveness. Some members of this community have been known to engage in controversial practices, such as "bonesmashing" or using self-injected fillers.

Despite the allure of the trend, it appears not to be widespread. One TikTok user admitted, "I stopped using cologne, and I've been getting more compliments on my disgusting onion smell than ever." Another wrote, "The reason you can't pull baddies is because you wear cologne and deodorant."

Pheromones are chemical signals released between individuals of the same species that can trigger behavioral or physiological responses. While these chemicals are linked to mating in animal species, a link between pheromones and romantic attraction has not been established in humans.

Pamela Dalton, a psychologist and olfactory scientist at the Monell Chemical Senses Center, explains that while it is possible to be attracted to how someone smells, it may not necessarily be due to pheromones. Instead, it may simply be that one has become fond of a particular scent associated with a partner.

Despite the misconceptions, Dalton emphasizes that strong smells can be considered attractive for intimate partners, but it is rare for this to occur with strangers. "Not showering isn't pheromone-maxxing," Teymour says. "For the most part, it's bacteria-maxxing."

Proper hygiene, according to Teymour, involves using a gentle cleanser in areas prone to sweat, bacteria, and odor, avoiding overly hot water and harsh antibacterial soaps, and understanding the role of products on one's skin. She advises that good hygiene means keeping the skin clean, comfortable, and healthy, without eliminating every trace of natural scent or disrupting the skin microbiome.

As the trend of pheromone-maxxing continues to gain attention, it remains to be seen whether it will gain more traction or fade away. For now, it serves as an interesting example of how social media can influence the way young people experiment with their identity and self-presentation.
