Texas Couple Celebrates Engagement with Thematic H-E-B Photoshoot

In an inventive tribute to their shared history and Texas roots, a newly engaged couple has captured widespread attention online after staging their official engagement photoshoot inside the aisles of a Houston grocery store.

Cara DeGaish and David Quiroz decided to commemorate their relationship milestones by posing for portraits at the H-E-B location situated off Bunker Hill Road. Photographer Miranda Zaebst directed the session, producing an imaginative collection of photos designed to showcase both the couple's performance backgrounds in musical theater and their long-standing personal affinity for the iconic Lone Star State supermarket brand.

The creative session quickly found a receptive audience after DeGaish shared the pictures of Quiroz's proposal on her personal Instagram account on September 3. Within less than a week, the post achieved semi-viral status across social media, amassing upwards of 3,000 likes and dozens of supportive comments by September 9.

Reflecting on the unexpected social media attention, DeGaish admitted that the widespread enthusiasm came as a surprise to everyone involved. She noted that neither she, Quiroz, nor their photographer anticipated the images would circulate as broadly or resonate as deeply as they did with fellow Texans.

The choice of setting was deeply deliberate rather than a random novelty. The specific store at 9710 Katy Freeway in Houston carries significant meaning for both partners, as the San Antonio-based grocery company has played a prominent and recurring role throughout their lives.

For Quiroz, the Bunker Hill Road supermarket holds direct ties to his past work experience. During his time as a college student, he was employed inside that exact location, serving on the staff as an assistant store manager before later embarking on other creative and professional endeavors.

DeGaish’s emotional connection to the retailer stretches even further back into her youth. Growing up in the coastal town of Portland, Texas—situated just across the Nueces Bay Causeway from Corpus Christi—the regional grocery chain served as a constant backdrop to her daily routine and upbringing.

DeGaish recounted that during her high school years, she lived merely ten minutes away from her hometown store and frequently visited just to walk through the aisles. Over the years, the retail chain remained one of the most reliable and consistent fixtures in her environment.

While large metropolitan supermarkets in major urban hubs like Houston can often feel fast-paced or stressful to navigate, DeGaish highlighted the comforting atmosphere associated with smaller community branches. For her, the familiar environment of a small-town grocery store provided a deep sense of safety and nostalgia that stayed with her into adulthood.

The couple's romantic journey began during their undergraduate studies at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. Both had enrolled in the university's musical theater program, bringing their shared passion for the performing arts into the same creative space.

The academic program was notably intimate, featuring a small and dedicated cohort of roughly 10 to 15 students in total. Because of the close-knit class size, peers quickly became familiar with one another, and DeGaish immediately took notice of Quiroz as soon as he first walked into the classroom.

Recalling her initial impressions, DeGaish remembered being instantly captivated by Quiroz’s presence. She noted that she immediately found him very handsome and made an internal determination that she wanted to introduce herself and get to know him better.

Despite that immediate interest, their first spoken exchange outside the classroom did not go as smoothly as planned. While walking through a campus parking lot toward their vehicles, DeGaish called out across a distance of roughly 40 feet to introduce herself, cheerfully stating her name and remarking that they had not yet formally met. Quiroz turned around, offered a brief introduction of his own, and immediately continued walking in the opposite direction.

According to DeGaish, Quiroz later provided his own humorous rationale for why he abruptly brushed off her greeting that day. He confessed that he initially viewed her enthusiastic approach with skepticism, assuming that no one could naturally be that kind and suspecting her friendly introduction was insincere.

The initial hesitation between the two classmates eventually dissolved several months later when a theatrical project brought them together. Roughly seven months after their awkward parking lot exchange, DeGaish and Quiroz were both cast in a university production of the musical "Hands on a Hard Body," which allowed them to collaborate closely and develop a lasting bond.

By blending their theatrical roots with a nod to Quiroz's former workplace and DeGaish's childhood memories, the engagement photos brought their shared journey full circle, turning a trip down the grocery aisle into a celebrated milestone.
