Newly released body-worn camera footage offers a detailed view of the moments leading up to a fatal police shooting in Santa Monica, where officers confronted and killed an armed individual in the middle of a bustling public park. The Santa Monica Police Department made the video available on Saturday, shedding light on the rapid sequence of events that disrupted a crowded weekend afternoon and left one man dead.
The fatal incident took place on August 22, shortly before 1 p.m., near the intersection of Broadway and Ocean Avenue. Law enforcement officers were initially dispatched to the popular coastal area following an emergency report of an altercation involving a man who was allegedly chasing a woman near the Broadway stairs, a well-traveled pedestrian route leading toward the Santa Monica Pier.
Upon arriving at the scene, responding officers entered Palisades Park to begin gathering statements from witnesses and determine the whereabouts of the individual involved in the initial disturbance. However, as the preliminary inquiry was underway, officers suddenly found themselves facing an unexpected and separate threat that developed in plain view of numerous park visitors.
According to department officials, officers noticed another man walking within the park while holding a large knife elevated above his head. Investigators subsequently clarified that this individual had no connection to the earlier report regarding the woman being pursued near the stairs, making the encounter an entirely separate and spontaneous confrontation.
The newly released video captures the perspective of an officer as the situation escalated within seconds. In the footage, the armed man is seen walking directly toward the officers with the knife pointed forward in their direction, ignoring the visible police presence and the surrounding crowd of civilians.
As the distance between the man and the officers rapidly closed, an officer issued repeated and urgent verbal directives in an effort to de-escalate the encounter. The bodycam audio records the officer shouting clear warnings: "Hey, put that down! Put that down! Put that down!" Despite these successive commands to disarm, the man continued advancing toward the officers, prompting the officer to discharge their duty weapon.
The shooting took place in the middle of a high-density recreational zone during a peak afternoon hour. Footage shows bystanders, including local vendors and visiting families, hurriedly scrambling to clear the area and move out of the line of danger as the armed subject moved toward law enforcement.
Following the gunfire, investigators examined the scene and recovered the weapon used during the confrontation. Police described it as a large, fixed-blade utility-style knife featuring distinctive serrations along its edge. Further examination revealed that the man was carrying a total of three knives on his person at the time of the incident.
Immediately after the shots were fired, officers on the scene moved to initiate emergency lifesaving measures, attempting to stabilize the wounded man before paramedics could arrive. The chaotic scene drew the attention of onlookers throughout the park who witnessed the post-shooting medical response.
Among the witnesses was Caroline Iwanchuk, who observed law enforcement personnel attempting emergency resuscitation in the immediate aftermath of the gunfire. She described stepping outside and seeing officers performing chest compressions on the injured man, noting the distressing nature of watching such an intense medical emergency unfold in a public space.
The wounded man was transported from Palisades Park to a nearby hospital for emergency trauma treatment. Despite resuscitation efforts by officers and medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the medical facility. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office later identified the deceased as 44-year-old Michael Rodriguez.
The fatal shooting prompted an extensive law enforcement response that altered operations throughout the area. A significant portion of Palisades Park was cordoned off with police tape and completely shut down to the public into the late evening hours as forensic teams documented the scene and gathered physical evidence.
The Santa Monica Police Department noted that the information and recordings released thus far represent preliminary findings from the initial phase of the inquiry. A comprehensive criminal investigation remains ongoing to fully evaluate all factors surrounding the armed approach and subsequent use of lethal force.
In accordance with standard protocol for officer-involved shootings, the Santa Monica Police Department's Internal Affairs Unit has also launched an independent administrative review. This internal inquiry will evaluate the tactics, actions, and adherence to departmental policies displayed during the encounter, as investigators work to compile a complete record of the deadly confrontation.
