The village of Paw Paw, Illinois, is preparing to welcome thousands of regional travelers and agricultural enthusiasts later this month as the community hosts its third annual Pawpaw Festival. Organized by the local Lions Club, the single-day celebration will take place on Saturday, Sept. 26, spotlighting both the town and the distinct native fruit from which it derives its name.
The community-wide gathering is scheduled to open at 10 a.m. at Paw Paw Veterans Park, located at 314 Chapman St. Admission to the park grounds is free for all attendees, continuing the organizers' mission to offer an accessible educational and cultural experience for local residents and traveling visitors alike.
At the center of the festivities is the pawpaw, recognized by botanists as the largest edible tree fruit native to the North American continent. Celebrated for its custardy texture and tropical palate, the fruit delivers a complex flavor profile frequently compared to a blend of mango, banana, and pineapple, making it a unique culinary curiosity in the Midwest.
Beyond offering an introduction to the fruit itself, the gathering serves as an important civic showcase for the village of Paw Paw. Organizers view the event as an opportunity to introduce broader audiences to the northern Illinois community, weaving local history and hospitality into the botanical showcase.
The decision to expand programming for the upcoming event follows an exceptionally strong turnout during the 2025 celebration. Last year, the festival drew an estimated crowd of 5,000 visitors to the small community, demonstrating a growing public curiosity surrounding native plants and specialty local produce.
Historical registration data collected during the 2025 festival underscored the wide geographic appeal of the event. Sign-in records showed that attendees traveled from 20 different U.S. states and as far away as France, representing more than 210 distinct municipalities. Roughly 34 percent of all logged attendees commuted from the greater Chicago metropolitan area.
Festival leadership noted that the rapid growth has transformed what was originally envisioned as an intimate neighborhood event into a prominent regional tourism draw. Neal Rogers, chair of the Pawpaw Festival Committee and a member of the Paw Paw Lions Club, emphasized that visitors regularly travel long distances to experience a fruit that remains unfamiliar to the broader public.
Rogers explained that the organizing committee has spent the past year reviewing logistics to ensure the 2026 iteration operates smoothly. By building on operational feedback and lessons learned from the massive 2025 crowd, planners intend to present an expanded layout designed to manage increased foot traffic while maintaining a welcoming small-town atmosphere.
Attendees visiting the park will have multiple opportunities to sample the harvest through complimentary tasting stations. In addition to offering fresh pawpaw fruit for immediate consumption, the festival will provide whole pawpaw trees for purchase, encouraging home gardeners and hobbyists to cultivate the native species on their own properties.
The culinary lineup extends beyond raw fruit to feature a selection of specialty food and beverage creations developed specifically for the festival. Among the notable offerings are pawpaw-infused beers, specialty ice cream, and a custom pawpaw cheesecake produced by the renowned Chicago-based bakery Eli's Cheesecake.
In addition to food offerings, the festival has scheduled a variety of educational and experiential activities. Attendees can take part in structured programming focused on native fruit cultivation or board dedicated tram tours designed to showcase established pawpaw groves growing within the surrounding local area.
Entertainment options will span across the park grounds throughout the day, including live musical performances alongside an extensive marketplace featuring regional artisans and commercial vendors. Younger attendees will have access to a dedicated Kids Corner equipped with bounce houses and structured family activities.
The execution of the festival relies on collaborative partnerships established across the public, private, and academic sectors. The Paw Paw Lions Club is hosting the event in direct partnership with the Pizzo Group, receiving additional promotional and organizational support from Visit Northwest Illinois, Northern Illinois University, NuMark Credit Union, Paw Paw Farms Inc., and Eli's Cheesecake.
With festival preparations entering their final stages, event organizers confirmed that applications remain open for prospective commercial vendors and sponsors interested in participating in the celebration. As the Sept. 26 date approaches, community leaders anticipate another strong turnout from across the Midwest and beyond.
