State preservation officials in New York have put forward a slate of 23 diverse properties and historic districts for listing on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The nominations reflect an expansive effort to document and safeguard the architectural, cultural, and economic milestones that have shaped communities across the state over multiple generations.

The formal recommendations were approved during a quarterly meeting of the New York State Board for Historic Preservation held on September 9. Following that session, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced the comprehensive list of proposed sites, which span urban centers, rural landscapes, and small towns across upstate and downstate regions.

Among the notable nominees is an unusual octagonal circus house situated in Cortland County, alongside a well-preserved Catskills mountain lodge located in Ulster County. The board also recommended a specialized railroad-focused historic district in Clinton County, as well as New York City’s famed Holcombe Rucker Park Basketball Court, a cultural and athletic touchstone recognized worldwide.

The selected properties represent an array of building styles, eras, and uses, ranging from transit infrastructure and neighborhood commercial cores to venues deeply rooted in sports and leisure. Officials noted that each designated site captures a unique element of how local populations lived, worked, and gathered throughout New York's history.

Kathy Moser, the commissioner of the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, emphasized that this recent collection of nominees showcases the active role residents have played in constructing and maintaining their neighborhoods. She pointed out that the roster encompasses everything from public housing dedicated to veterans, seniors, and working families to historic downtown hubs and beloved neighborhood recreation sites.

Moser noted that continuous archival and architectural research is helping state historians broaden their perspective on New York's heritage. By identifying and including historically overlooked landmarks alongside traditional historic districts, the state seeks to construct an official historical record that genuinely mirrors the multi-faceted experiences and diversity of its population.

Echoing that sentiment, Daniel Mackay, the agency's deputy commissioner for historic preservation, stated that the nominated sites provide crucial context regarding New York’s broad economic, architectural, and social evolution. He highlighted that expanding the boundaries of what is traditionally recognized allows the state to better capture the complete story of its past.

Mackay also pointed out that formal recognition offers tangible advantages to local communities and private owners. Securing a place on the registers opens pathways to critical resources, enabling custodians of historic structures to invest in necessary restoration work and maintain their functional utility for years to come.

Inclusion on the State and National Registers confers more than prestige; it serves as a gateway to financial mechanisms designed to facilitate revitalization. Owners of listed historic structures gain eligibility for state matching grants as well as federal historic rehabilitation tax credits, both of which are designed to make complex preservation projects economically viable.

New York currently paces the nation in leveraging historic tax credits to stimulate local revitalization. Between 2019 and 2025 alone, the state recorded approximately $9.6 billion in total rehabilitation expenditures tied directly to historic preservation programs, outpacing all other states in capital investment in historic fabric.

The economic momentum behind these preservation programs has been building over the long term. Since 2006, the historic tax credit framework has driven more than $16.4 billion in overall project spending statewide, transforming distressed assets into productive commercial, residential, and civic spaces while fostering employment.

Recent economic assessments underscore the broader fiscal footprint of these investments. Between 2019 and 2023, tax-credit-supported rehabilitation efforts in New York generated 91,386 jobs and contributed over $1.79 billion in combined local, state, and federal tax revenues, demonstrating the link between cultural conservation and economic growth.

The State and National Registers function as the official catalogs of buildings, districts, structures, objects, and archaeological landscapes deemed significant to the state and the country. At present, New York is home to more than 131,000 historic properties entered into the National Register, comprising both individual landmarks and contributing structures within historic districts.

The latest nominations were primarily initiated at the grassroots level. Municipal governments, community organizations, and private property owners from various regions across the state sponsored the nomination packages, assembling the necessary historical documentation and architectural evaluations required for board consideration.

The nomination process now advances to the final administrative phase. Once the recommendations receive formal sign-off from the commissioner, who serves concurrently as the State Historic Preservation Officer, the properties are placed on the New York State Register of Historic Places and forwarded to the National Park Service in Washington, D.C., for final review and official entry into the National Register. Detailed documentation and photographs for each nominated site are accessible through the state parks agency's public portal.
