Man Receives 42-Year Prison Sentence in Fatal Hit-and-Run Murder of Chicago Teenager

A Chicago man has been sentenced to more than four decades in prison for the murder of a 16-year-old girl who was killed during a violent hit-and-run vehicular collision nearly five years ago. The sentencing concludes a lengthy legal process that stemmed from a deadly confrontation on the city's Northwest Side following a family outing to a Major League Baseball game.

Josue Mendoza Barrera was ordered on Tuesday to serve a 42-year prison sentence after being convicted on two counts of murder as well as an additional charge for failing to report a crash. During the sentencing hearing, the court determined that Mendoza Barrera will receive credit for the 1,768 days he has already spent in custody since his initial apprehension and detention.

The judicial ruling brings formal closure to a case that traces back to the late summer of 2021, when the life of 16-year-old Ashley Sanchez was abruptly cut short. The deadly chain of events unfolded on August 3, 2021, within Chicago’s Hermosa neighborhood, leaving a local family shattered and prompting an extensive police investigation.

On the night of the fatal incident, Sanchez had spent the evening attending a Chicago White Sox baseball game with her parents. Following the conclusion of the game, the family drove into the city to drop off a friend before attempting to make their way back home. What began as a normal family excursion quickly transformed into a terrifying ordeal.

According to accounts shared by the victim's parents, their vehicle was approached by a tan minivan while navigating through the neighborhood. The occupants of the minivan pulled up directly alongside the family's car, at which point two individuals inside displayed a firearm in what the parents described as an attempted carjacking confrontation.

The threatening encounter immediately escalated into a dangerous vehicle pursuit through the urban corridor. Prosecutors established that Mendoza Barrera, operating as the driver of the tan minivan, chased down the vehicle occupied by Sanchez and her parents. The high-speed chase reached its catastrophic conclusion in the 4500 block of West Armitage Avenue.

Mendoza Barrera drove the minivan directly into the family’s vehicle, striking it with enough violent force to cause fatal injuries to the teenage passenger. Rather than stopping to render aid, assess the damage, or contact emergency responders, Mendoza Barrera immediately fled the area, leaving the wreckage behind in the street.

Emergency personnel responded to the crash scene in the Hermosa neighborhood, but Sanchez succumbed to the severe trauma sustained during the collision. The sudden, violent loss of the high school student sent shockwaves through her community and ignited a determined push by investigators and relatives to track down the fleeing driver.

In the days and weeks following the fatal collision, the victim's family publicly pleaded for tips, community information, and investigative leads that could assist law enforcement in identifying the individuals responsible for the assault. Those efforts ultimately culminated in the arrest and formal prosecution of Mendoza Barrera on multiple felony counts.

At the time of her death, Sanchez was preparing to step into a new chapter of her life as an incoming junior at Waubonsie Valley High School. Residing with her family in Aurora, she was widely recognized among peers and educators as a driven, hardworking student who had set clear, ambitious goals for her academic and professional future.

Beyond her academic pursuits, Sanchez was an accomplished and dedicated competitive bowler. She devoted substantial time to refining her athletic skills with the objective of earning a collegiate scholarship to help finance her future higher education.

Her long-term career ambition was centered on entering the legal profession. Sanchez aspired to pursue an undergraduate degree in criminal justice with the ultimate aim of attending law school and working as a criminal prosecutor, dedicated to serving the justice system.

The tragic reality that an aspiring prosecutor was killed in an act of senseless street violence added profound sorrow to the proceedings, as her family and loved ones endured nearly five years of court hearings before seeing the case resolved.

Mendoza Barrera's conviction on two distinct counts of murder alongside the charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident emphasizes the severe criminal responsibility tied to predatory vehicle chases and hit-and-run fatalities. The substantial prison term reflects the gravity of taking a young life under circumstances involving weapon threats and reckless vehicular pursuit.

With the imposition of the 42-year term and the deduction of his accrued pre-trial detention credit, the state's legal proceedings against Mendoza Barrera have concluded, delivering a measure of long-sought accountability for the devastating loss of Ashley Sanchez.
