Long regarded as a resilient political veteran capable of managing broad coalitions, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is encountering unexpected turbulence in her bid for reelection. Close supporters and political insiders are increasingly expressing concern that her progressive challenger, City Council Member Nithya Raman, is capturing the race's decisive energy and could stage an upset.

The shifting dynamics mark a sharp contrast to earlier expectations. Following her victory in 2022, Bass appeared well-positioned to maintain her hold on City Hall. She managed to avert another costly challenge from billionaire developer Rick Caruso, who opted not to run again, and initially gathered a vast coalition of endorsements spanning from law enforcement unions to Democratic Socialists of America-aligned officials, as well as high-profile support from figures like Governor Gavin Newsom and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Yet, Bass entered this cycle under historic strain. After her public approval numbers tumbled in the aftermath of last year's devastating wildfires, she became the first sitting mayor of Los Angeles in more than two decades forced into a general runoff election. While her inner circle long believed her institutional strength would comfortably carry her to victory, persistent vulnerabilities have steadily eroded that confidence.

Public and private polling still shows Bass with a narrow edge. A survey conducted in late July, along with other internal tracking, placed the incumbent ahead by a mid-single-digit margin. However, allies acknowledge that such leads remain precarious, with grassroots enthusiasm increasingly coalescing around Raman's insurgent platform rather than the mayor's reelection bid.

Compounding the mayor's political difficulties is a series of recent crises and administrative setbacks. A primary flashpoint occurred when a massive fire broke out at a cold storage warehouse, causing widespread health complaints among hundreds of residents and leaving behind millions of pounds of rotting food that required nearly two months to clear away.

The warehouse crisis quickly evolved into a political liability when reports revealed that an unpaid, close adviser to the mayor had been providing crisis public relations services for the company managing the damaged site. The disclosure fueled intense public scrutiny regarding conflicts of interest and administrative oversight within City Hall.

The mayor's office has faced additional policy headwinds, including newly released municipal data showing an uptick in the city's homeless count. The increase directly challenged one of the central achievements of Bass' first term, depriving her campaign of a vital talking point on homelessness reduction.

Compounding these challenges were internal staffing shakeups across both the mayor's government staff and her campaign team, alongside an embarrassing episode in which her campaign promoted a questionable poll that was subsequently discredited. A much-mocked promotional video, intended to showcase the mayor filling a constituent-reported pothole in the style of New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, stalled when a parked vehicle blocked the work crew, providing critics with a visual symbol of a stumbling summer campaign.

Meanwhile, Raman's campaign has gained crucial institutional backing that threatens to diminish the mayor's traditional labor advantage. Although Raman began the contest largely isolated from major political organizations, she has recently secured pivotal endorsements from key labor groups, including Unite Here Local 11 and the carpenters union, the latter of which formally defected from supporting Bass.

The addition of Unite Here Local 11 provides Raman with access to one of the most formidable field and canvassing operations in Southern California. While Bass still maintains a substantial fundraising lead and benefits from well-funded independent expenditure committees, the shift among labor unions indicates growing institutional comfort with Raman's candidacy.

In response to the tightening environment, the Bass campaign has pivoted aggressively toward confronting Raman's record directly. Campaign operatives recently launched a dedicated attack website and social media campaign under the moniker "No Show Nithya," accusing the council member of failing to participate in key council votes and neglecting municipal responsibilities.

The campaign has also amplified criticisms from fellow council members, circulating sharp statements from Council Member Traci Park, who represents the Pacific Palisades. Park publicly accused Raman of failing to properly support and engage her neighborhood during the response to last year's destructive wildfires.

The aggressive pivot has sparked debate among Democratic strategists about the best path forward. Some consultants, including Rick Taylor, argue that an unrelenting contrast campaign is necessary to expose Raman's vulnerabilities and shift the focus away from City Hall's recent troubles, contending that an aggressive approach is the only viable route to victory.

Other observers, however, caution that going on the offensive carries substantial risks for the incumbent. Strategist Jeremy Oberstein noted that an excessively negative tone could undermine Bass' established political brand as a pragmatic consensus builder capable of uniting diverse factions across the city, warning that it might signal desperation rather than strength.

Despite the growing unease among supporters, campaign leadership maintains that the mayor remains on a steady trajectory toward victory. Chief strategist Julie Chavez Rodriguez, a veteran of the Biden-Harris administration who took over the campaign's top strategy role in June, dismissed concerns of slipping momentum, asserting that the race was always anticipated to be competitive and that Bass continues to command robust support among her core political base.
