Joseph Arminio Wins Delaware Republican Primary to Face Representative Sarah McBride in November

Delaware Republican primary voters selected Joseph Arminio on Tuesday to serve as the party's nominee for the state's lone seat in the United States House of Representatives. Campaigning widely under the moniker "Dr. Joe," the Wilmington native secured the victory to earn a place on the November general election ballot, where he will officially challenge incumbent Democratic U.S. Representative Sarah McBride.

The outcome of the primary contest was determined swiftly on the night of September 15, with both the Associated Press and CNN projecting Arminio as the winner just before 9:00 p.m. Unofficial election returns indicated that Arminio captured roughly 48 percent of the total vote at that stage. By 9:15 p.m., updated counts showed that he had accumulated more than 11,790 votes, solidifying an insurmountable lead over his competitors.

Throughout the primary season, Arminio established his political identity as a populist conservative and a self-described "truth teller." Presenting himself as an outsider voice grounded in Delaware values, the Wilmington native campaigned on bringing practical solutions to federal governance while connecting directly with voters seeking change in Washington.

The nomination contest required Arminio to outpoll two other contenders seeking the Republican mantle. Among the candidates in the race was the Reverend Earl Cooper, a former church pastor who transitioned into running a private business. Also on the ballot was John J. Whalen III, a retired business executive who had previously won the state's Republican congressional nomination in 2024 before being defeated by McBride in that year's general election.

With the primary concluded, the general election matchup for Delaware's at-large congressional district is officially established. Arminio will direct his campaign toward challenging McBride in the November election, setting up a clear contrast in political philosophy, policy direction, and legislative priorities for the statewide seat.

Arminio built his primary platform around several core domestic issues that resonated with Republican voters across the state. In statements and interviews with Delaware Online and The News Journal during the run-up to the primary, he regularly emphasized the necessity of revitalizing the American economy, reforming the education system, enforcing immigration standards, bolstering national defense, and rigorously upholding the United States Constitution.

A key pillar of Arminio's campaign messaging was his emphasis on his policy background. He frequently pointed to decades of professional policy experience in Washington, framing that extensive exposure as an essential credential that would enable him to hit the ground running as an effective federal lawmaker representing Delaware's interests.

To address economic instability, Arminio advanced a detailed framework titled the "American Prosperity Plan." This policy agenda was specifically crafted to target the growing burdens of both private household debt and broader public debt, promising structural measures intended to foster economic resilience and relief for working families.

On the international stage, Arminio promoted distinctive foreign policy positions that set his campaign apart from traditional party platforms. He proposed an overarching Middle East strategy referred to as "The Grand Bargain" and voiced resolute opposition to the ongoing war in Iran, advocating for an altered strategic approach to international conflict.

The candidate's detailed policy pitches, spanning domestic fiscal debt reduction to Middle Eastern diplomatic shifts, formed the centerpiece of his primary appeal. By pairing economic populism with strong constitutional commitments and non-interventionist foreign policy stances, Arminio successfully differentiated himself from his two primary rivals.

Primary voting took place across various precincts in Delaware on Tuesday, drawing local residents to neighborhood polling centers such as P.S. duPont Middle School in Wilmington. Voters cast their ballots amid rows of campaign signs, demonstrating active grassroots engagement in the state's federal and local primary selections.

The day's election activities also highlighted broader political interest across the state ballot. Beyond the congressional primary, candidates seeking state-level offices—including Adriana Leela Bohm for state senate, Michael Smith for state treasurer, and Robert Bahnsen for state representative—interacted with voters and campaign staff at locations such as P.S. duPont Middle School and Joseph E. Johnson School in Wilmington.

As the race moves forward, Arminio will work to expand his primary support base into a broad coalition capable of competing statewide in Delaware. Unseating an incumbent member of Congress will require the Republican nominee to present his populist platform to independent and moderate voters across all three counties.

The general election campaign between Arminio and McBride now begins in earnest, offering Delaware voters a stark choice between the incumbent lawmaker and her populist Republican challenger. The coming months will see both candidates taking their respective visions for the economy, national defense, and governance directly to the electorate ahead of the November vote.
