Indiana Prosecutor Declines Charges in Fabricated Child Abuse Report Targeting Pete Buttigieg's Family

A woman who made an unsubstantiated child abuse accusation that temporarily separated former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg from his young children will not face criminal prosecution, according to legal authorities. The unfounded report prompted an intrusive investigation that forced the family's 4-year-old twins to undergo separate forensic interviews and spend the night away from their home.

Marshall County Prosecutor E. Nelson Chipman Jr. in Indiana determined that criminal charges could not be pursued because the individual who initiated the complaint lacked the required criminal intent. While acknowledging the severe disruption and distress the false claim caused to an innocent household, Chipman concluded that a conviction was legally unachievable under the circumstances.

In a July 29 communication directed to the Indiana State Police, Chipman detailed that the suspect’s severe history of substance abuse and persistent psychological instability made it impossible to establish that she intentionally and knowingly filed a false report. The prosecutor noted that her underlying condition significantly impaired her cognitive capabilities during the period the claim was generated.

Public records identify the individual responsible only by the initials "TJ." Authorities reported that she generated the fabricated report while traveling in Indiana to visit family members, subsequently returning to her residence in Alabama after the incident occurred.

According to investigative findings, the woman had been experiencing vivid hallucinations, auditory disturbances, and grandiose delusions that severely skewed her perception of reality. During her temporary stay in Indiana, she had at least three separate interactions with law enforcement personnel. Among these encounters was an arrest connected to an alleged domestic battery, during which testing revealed she had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.32.

The false accusation triggered an immediate emergency response at the Michigan residence of Pete Buttigieg and his husband, Chasten Buttigieg. A caseworker from Child Protective Services, accompanied by an officer from the Michigan State Police, arrived directly at the couple's doorstep to act on the unverified tip.

Upon arriving at the residence, officials instructed Pete Buttigieg that he was barred from being alone with the 4-year-old twins until caseworkers could interview each child independently. To comply with the directive while shielding the children from further distress, the family arranged for the twins to spend the night under the care of Chasten Buttigieg's parents.

Reflecting on the episode following the ordeal, Pete Buttigieg characterized the harrowing incident as a cruel and politically motivated hoax. He revealed that even one of the responding officers suspected political motivations lay behind the report, and he described the 24-hour period of separation from his children as among the darkest hours of his life.

The Michigan State Police eventually concluded their inquiry by confirming that the allegations of abuse were entirely groundless. In public statements regarding the incident, the law enforcement agency warned that malicious or groundless complaints create significant hazards by pulling vital child welfare workers and police officers away from authentic crises involving endangered children.

Subsequent reviews of official records revealed significant systemic failures and lapses in communication between agencies across state boundaries. Indiana child welfare personnel had initially received the report and transferred the complaint to their counterparts in Michigan without supplying essential identifying details, such as the caller's full name or any contact information.

Compounding the bureaucratic breakdown, Michigan law enforcement officials waited six days after their initial confrontation at the Buttigieg residence before making any active attempt to identify or verify the individual who submitted the allegation. By the time investigators began vetting the caller's background, the family had already been subjected to an invasive home visit and the children had undergone questioning by unfamiliar caseworkers without their parents present.

Child welfare professionals who examined the case files pointed to significant lapses in judgment and inadequate coordination between Indiana and Michigan authorities as primary factors that escalated the response. The systemic missteps allowed an entirely unvetted and erratic claim to severely disrupt a family's life before any basic credibility checks were performed.

In response to the operational handling of the complaint, the Michigan Attorney General's office initiated an independent investigation into both the origin of the false allegation and the regulatory protocol followed by the involved agencies. A spokesperson for the attorney general confirmed that the formal review into the matter remains ongoing.

The incident is part of a broader pattern of heightened scrutiny and political hostility that Pete and Chasten Buttigieg have encountered since entering the national spotlight. The couple's family life and marriage have frequently been weaponized by conservative commentators and political opponents, including widespread public ridicule when Pete Buttigieg utilized parental leave in 2021 to assist in caring for the couple's premature newborn twins.

Following the prosecutor's formal decision to forgo criminal charges, a representative for the Buttigieg family declined to provide immediate commentary on the legal outcome. However, the spokesperson reiterated previous statements indicating that the family continues to pursue comprehensive accountability and clear explanations regarding the administrative failures that led to the incident.
