Freeport Region Prepares for Busy Weekend of Community Fundraisers, Live Arts, and Entertainment

Residents across Freeport and its surrounding communities have a diverse slate of local activities to look forward to this weekend, ranging from vital non-profit fundraisers and outdoor competitions to live music performances and cultural celebrations. The wide-ranging lineup offers opportunities for community members to support local causes, enjoy regional musical talent, and participate in family-friendly gatherings.

Kicking off the weekend activities in Freeport, VOICES of Stephenson County is hosting its annual Fall Mum Sale at Lincoln Mall, situated at 1255 W. Galena Ave. Designed to generate crucial funding for local survivors of domestic and sexual violence, the seasonal sale features an inventory of roughly 1,000 mums available in an assortment of red, orange, white, yellow, and purple blooms. Located in the first storefront on the right side of the mall, the fundraiser runs across three days: Sept. 9 from noon to 5 p.m., Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sept. 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Individual plants are priced at $13, and attendees visiting on the afternoon of Sept. 9 can also enjoy musical entertainment from Ukulele Express between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Combat sports enthusiasts will find high-stakes action nearby on Friday evening as Cage Fury Fighting Championships presents "CFFC 161: Aladi vs. Lleshi" at the Hard Rock Casino Rockford, located at 7801 E. State St. Established in 2006, CFFC has earned a reputation across the country as a premier developmental mixed martial arts organization that nurtures rising talent in the sport. The main event features reigning interim flyweight titleholder Moshe "Straw Hat" Aladi putting his championship on the line against former NextGen champion Jerry Lleshi. Doors open at 5 p.m. on Sept. 11, with the official fight card starting at 6 p.m. and admission listed at $99.95.

Acoustic music lovers can head to Dakota on Friday night, Sept. 11, where musician Kristin Toon is scheduled to deliver a live patio set at Route 75 Bar & Grill, located at 320 E. Main St. The relaxed outdoor musical performance will run from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., offering an informal evening outing for patrons.

Meanwhile, in Lena, the regional group Blue Steel will take the stage at the Lena Brewing Company, 9426 W. Wagner Road, starting at 8 p.m. on Sept. 11. Known for their distinct blend of country and rock backed by an assertive edge, the RAMI award-winning ensemble features dual male and female lead vocalists supported by layered three-part harmonies.

Saturday, Sept. 12, begins with several major morning gatherings, including the Bruce Nielsen Memorial Car Show at the Friends Forever Humane Society, situated at 966 W. Rudy Road in Freeport. Running from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. rain or shine, the family-focused event welcomes leashed, friendly dogs and dedicates all generated proceeds toward the ongoing care of animals housed at the shelter facility.

Beyond admiring an array of showcase automobiles competing for Top 40 award distinctions, attendees at the car show can take part in raffles, win door prizes, and purchase food while enjoying background music. The event will also highlight informational presentations from organizations such as the Stephenson County K9 Unit, High Flying Huskies, Freeport ROTC, and Operation Fallen Flag. General spectator admission is free, while vehicle participants can register ahead of time for $10 or pay $15 at the gate on the day of the show.

Simultaneously, golfers will assemble for the Tee Off on Crime 2026 outing at The Freeport Club, 1614 S. Park Blvd., spanning from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 12. Priced at $125 per player, the event provides participants with an 18-hole round including a cart, access to a Bloody Mary Bar, pizza samples courtesy of the Wood Pellet Pizza Oven Company, lunch, and novelty features like the Gahm Enterprises Golf Ball Launcher and specialized Crime Scene Bunkers. Non-golfing supporters are also invited to contribute directly through sponsorships or by paying to sponsor local law enforcement officers for a day on the course.

Young readers and animal lovers can visit the Freeport Public Library at 100 E. Douglas St. on Saturday morning for the PAWS to Read initiative. Taking place from 11 a.m. to noon on Sept. 12, the educational session invites community children to practice their reading skills by sharing stories directly with certified visiting dogs from Therapy Dogs International.

Art and civic heritage will intersect on Saturday evening during "Freedom on the Rocks: A Celebration of United We Create," held from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Freeport Arts Plaza, 111 E. Douglas St. Commemorating the America at 250 milestone, the patriotic red, white, and blue-themed gathering will showcase the formal unveiling of the new United We Create Mural alongside the annual presentation of the local Cultural Leadership Awards.

Admission to Freedom on the Rocks is $50, with all proceeds directly benefiting the Freeport Art Museum to assist in maintaining free general museum admission and sustaining hands-on public educational programming. The evening features an all-American cookout catered by Marketside Meats & Deli, baked goods from Bezzie's Bakery, a full-service cash bar, and live jazz entertainment provided by the Highland Community College Big Band.

Comedy fans can head back to the Hard Rock Casino Rockford on Saturday evening, Sept. 12, as television personality and comedian Jonathan Van Ness takes the stage at 8 p.m., with venue doors opening at 7 p.m. The stand-up comedy performance centers on themes of joy, resilience, and personal reflection following JVN's unintended appearance in a political campaign advertisement. Tickets for the general admission event range from $42 to $66, and attendance is strictly restricted to guests aged 21 and older with valid photo identification.

Concluding Saturday's regional entertainment, rock band Fast Lane will deliver an energetic late-night performance at the Best Dam Bar, located at 13965 Best Road in Davis. The musical showcase is scheduled to run from 8 p.m. to midnight on Sept. 12, offering patrons four hours of live classic and modern rock favorites.

Looking ahead to the following week, historical reenactment group Women of Courage and Commitment will travel from Galena to present an educational program titled "Women of Courage: World War I." Running from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., the meticulously researched storytelling presentation will bring history to life through dramatized portrayals of four pioneering figures from the First World War era: Emma Goldman, Edith Cavell, Gertrude Bell, and Mata Hari. Due to limited venue seating, event organizers strongly encourage interested attendees to complete registration in advance.
