A former Macomb County Circuit Court judge, Mary Chrzanowski, has been appointed as the new chief of the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office's Conviction Integrity Unit. This unit was established in 2022 under Prosecutor Pete Lucido and focuses on reviewing cases where the convicted party claims innocence.
Chrzanowski, who brings a wealth of experience to the role, was hired earlier this month to succeed Gail Pamukov, who retired in May. As the unit's second chief, Chrzanowski will be responsible for examining claims of innocence, reviewing newly discovered evidence, and ensuring that convictions are legally sound and factually accurate.
"The integrity of our criminal justice system depends on public confidence that every conviction is accurate, fair, and supported by the evidence," Chrzanowski said. "I look forward to building on the outstanding foundation established by Ms. Pamukov and working to ensure justice is faithfully served."
Under Pamukov's leadership, the Conviction Integrity Unit exonerated Mack Howell and secured a $1.6 million federal grant to expand post-conviction DNA reviews. The unit's dedication to reviewing cases and correcting wrongful convictions has been a significant development in the county's legal landscape.
Before her appointment, Chrzanowski served as an assistant Macomb County prosecutor in the early 1990s. She then spent 24 years on the Circuit Court bench, providing her with a deep understanding of the legal system and a commitment to fairness.
In 2020, Chrzanowski ran as a Democrat against Republican Lucido in the race to replace former Macomb County prosecutor Eric Smith, who was forced out of office following a financial scandal. Despite the political differences, Lucido expressed his support for Chrzanowski's appointment, highlighting her extensive judicial experience and dedication to justice.
"Judge Chrzanowski's decades of judicial experience, sound judgment, and commitment to fairness make her exceptionally well suited to lead the Conviction Integrity Unit," Lucido said in a statement. "She is a welcome addition to help us protect the integrity of the justice system."
The Conviction Integrity Unit plays a crucial role in maintaining the credibility of the criminal justice system by addressing claims of wrongful convictions. It reviews cases after someone has been convicted, examines new evidence, and works to ensure that convictions are based on accurate and reliable information.
"The unit reviews claims of innocence after someone is convicted, examines newly discovered evidence, and works to ensure convictions are both legally sound and factually accurate," Chrzanowski explained. "Our goal is to protect the integrity of the justice system and ensure that justice is served."
As the Conviction Integrity Unit continues to grow and evolve, Chrzanowski's appointment as chief signifies a commitment to upholding the values of fairness and accuracy in the legal process. Her leadership is expected to further strengthen the unit's efforts in reviewing and correcting wrongful convictions.
"The appointment of Mary Chrzanowski as the new chief of the Conviction Integrity Unit is a testament to the county's dedication to justice and the pursuit of accuracy in the legal system," said a spokesperson for the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office. "We are confident that her experience and commitment will continue to drive the unit's success in serving the community."
As the Conviction Integrity Unit under Chrzanowski's leadership moves forward, the Macomb County community can expect a renewed focus on ensuring that every conviction is fair and based on sound evidence. Chrzanowski's appointment marks a significant step towards upholding the integrity of the criminal justice system and serving justice for all.
