With the conclusion of Florida's primary contests, the state's political focus has pivoted entirely toward the upcoming general election. Electors across the Sunshine State are preparing to weigh in on high-profile races and constitutional questions that will shape the state’s executive, legislative, and fiscal landscape for years to come.

Unlike the August primary election, which operates under Florida’s closed primary framework where participants must be registered members of a specific political party to vote for that party's nominees, the general election is open to all registered voters. Regardless of whether an individual is registered as a Republican, a Democrat, or unaffiliated, every registered voter is eligible to cast a ballot for any candidate appearing on the general election slate.

At the forefront of the statewide ballot is the contest to succeed Governor Ron DeSantis in the executive mansion. Under the provisions established in Article IV of the Florida Constitution, no individual may seek election to the office of governor for more than two consecutive terms. Having fulfilled his two terms, DeSantis will officially step down from office on January 5, 2027, creating an open race for the state's highest office.

In addition to electing a new governor, Florida voters will also determine representation for a pivotal seat in the United States Senate. Federal and state legislative contests will share the ballot alongside critical statewide policy questions, most notably a proposed constitutional amendment addressing homestead property tax exemptions, giving voters direct input on local property tax structures.

Timing for the general election is formally set for Tuesday, November 3, 2026. This date arrives just two days after the scheduled conclusion of daylight saving time on November 1, when clocks standardly turn back one hour. That seasonal shift will proceed as usual unless federal lawmakers in the U.S. Senate pass the Sunshine Protection Act and President Trump enacts it into law beforehand.

To participate in these consequential decisions, eligible residents must ensure their voter registration is finalized well ahead of time. The absolute deadline to register to vote or to update existing registration records—including modifications to one's legal name, residential address, or party affiliation—falls on Monday, October 5, 2026.

Floridians wishing to confirm their registration standing can access the Florida Department of State’s Voter Information Lookup tool online. By submitting their legal first name, last name, and date of birth into the state system, voters can verify whether their status is active, ensuring they encounter no administrative obstacles when attempting to cast a ballot.

The election calendar also establishes critical dispatch dates for election administrators preparing mail-in voting materials. Supervisors of Elections are required to distribute mail-in ballots to military and overseas voters covered by the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) by September 19, 2026. For domestic voters residing within the United States, election offices will begin mailing requested ballots between September 24 and October 1, 2026.

For those planning to vote remotely, state regulations impose a strict cutoff to submit vote-by-mail requests. Electors must place their application for a mailed ballot no later than 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2026. Requests submitted after this statutory deadline cannot be processed for the general election cycle.

Registered voters must submit their ballot applications directly to the Supervisor of Elections office in the specific county where they maintain their legal voting residence. Applications can be delivered in person, conveyed over the telephone, or submitted in written format utilizing the official state application document, Form DS-DE 160.

State election guidelines emphasize that completed vote-by-mail ballots must be physically received by the local county Supervisor of Elections by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day, November 3, 2026. Ballots that arrive after this designated hour will not be tabulated, underscoring the necessity of allowing ample time for postal transit or utilizing designated secure drop-off options.

Voters who prefer in-person voting prior to November 3 can take advantage of Florida’s mandatory early voting period. Under state law, early voting will run for at least eight consecutive days, officially opening statewide no later than October 24 and concluding on October 31, 2026.

County election supervisors hold the statutory authority to expand this early voting window by adding additional days before or after the mandatory timeline. Unlike standard Election Day operations, voters utilizing the early voting timeframe are permitted to cast their ballots at any designated early voting site located within their home county, rather than being restricted to their specific neighborhood precinct.

On Election Day itself, polling places across Florida will open their doors at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m. local time. Voters casting their ballots on November 3 must report strictly to their assigned home precinct, and state regulations guarantee that any voter who is standing in line at their designated polling location by 7:00 p.m. local time remains legally entitled to vote.

Altogether, Florida electors have three primary avenues available to participate in the democratic process: voting by mail, voting early at designated regional sites, or voting in person at their home precinct on Election Day. By tracking these essential calendar deadlines and requirements, voters can ensure their voices are registered across this major election cycle.
