Episcopal Church Appoints First Transgender Cathedral Dean in Historic Milestone

The Episcopal Church has marked a major institutional milestone with the installation of its first openly transgender cathedral dean. The Very Rev. Micah Cronin has formally assumed leadership at All Saints' Cathedral in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, stepping into a role that represents both personal triumph and a significant moment in the denomination’s ongoing history of inclusion.

Cronin officially stepped into the leadership position in August, taking the helm of an active and LGBTQ+-affirming congregation in downtown Milwaukee. The historic cathedral currently welcomes an average of approximately 70 worshippers to its regular Sunday services, serving as a spiritual home for a diverse assembly of local believers.

At 30 years old, the newly appointed dean brings a personal journey shaped by perseverance through religious exclusion. Growing up in a conservative church environment in rural New York State, Cronin experienced a spiritual community that refused to affirm or accept his transgender identity.

That trajectory shifted significantly when Cronin was 19 years old. While living in Olean, New York, he encountered an affirming Episcopal congregation that welcomed him fully, a transformative experience that prompted his formal conversion to the Episcopal tradition and set him on a path toward ordained ministry.

Speaking about his appointment in an interview with the Episcopal News Service, Cronin emphasized that his elevation to dean serves as a tangible reminder that faith communities have room for LGBTQ+ Christians. He stressed that spiritual spaces should not be viewed as inherently hostile or closed to people based on their gender identity.

Cronin reflected on the broader mission of the denomination, describing the current era of the Episcopal Church as one defined by an intentional commitment to radical hospitality. In his view, the church’s proactive stance on welcoming and affirming marginalized individuals stems directly from its foundational Christian faith and core gospel values.

The newly installed dean also underscored the distinct pastoral opportunities that come with his visibility. He explained that simply being present as an openly transgender priest enables meaningful, bridge-building dialogues with individuals across the religious spectrum, opening doors to share the Christian Gospel in venues where it might otherwise remain unheard.

Before taking on his responsibilities in Wisconsin, Cronin spent time ministering on the East Coast, where he served as a transitional deacon within the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey. During that period of his formation, he frequently used his platform to advocate for expanding tolerance and cultivating respectful dialogue across deep ideological chasms.

Cronin’s theological perspective on reconciliation was prominently articulated in a 2022 essay written for the publication *Earth & Altar*. In that piece, he addressed the difficult spiritual discipline required to engage with ideological adversaries, urging believers to seek the divine even within those whose cultural and political convictions seem alien or harmful.

In his writings, Cronin contended that the Christian calling demands seeking and serving Christ in all people, including those who harbor homophobic, anti-transgender, or bigoted viewpoints. He clarified that extending such grace is not an endorsement of destructive actions, but rather an active participation in divine love, which he identified as the true instrument for overcoming societal and spiritual division.

Cronin's appointment comes against the backdrop of a long-standing institutional evolution within the Episcopal Church regarding LGBTQ+ inclusion. Fifty years prior, the denomination set a groundbreaking precedent during its 1976 General Convention by officially approving a resolution that recognized the sacred worth and rightful place of LGBTQ+ individuals within church life.

The historic appointment has been met with enthusiasm by advocates and fellow clergy throughout the broader denomination. Representatives from TransEpiscopal, an organization dedicated to supporting and advocating for transgender and non-binary individuals within the church, celebrated the elevation as a vital advancement for inclusive ministry.

The Rev. Cameron Partridge, an active member of TransEpiscopal, lauded Cronin's elevation to cathedral dean, noting how meaningful it is to witness the Episcopal Church provide an environment where Cronin can authentically live out his pastoral vocation as both a priest and a transgender individual.

Partridge also connected Cronin's new post to the deeper institutional memory of the region, invoking the legacy of the late Rev. Gari Green. Green, a founding figure within TransEpiscopal who ministered in the Diocese of Milwaukee until her death in 2024, played a pioneering role in establishing a legacy of welcoming gender minorities throughout Wisconsin’s Episcopal community.

Reflecting on that historical continuity, Partridge observed that pioneers like Green would likely view Cronin’s appointment as an authentic sign of hope. As Cronin begins his tenure at All Saints' Cathedral, his leadership stands as both a continuation of regional trailblazing and a national symbol of the Episcopal Church’s ongoing embrace of diverse voices at the highest levels of parish leadership.
