Driver Arrested in Brick Following High-Speed Chase and Foot Pursuit Near High School

A routine morning student drop-off at Brick Memorial High School escalated into a dangerous situation on Tuesday after a local driver fled a traffic stop, narrowly missed hitting two school crossing guards, and led police on a high-speed vehicle and foot pursuit, municipal law enforcement officials reported.

Authorities identified the suspect as Corey Goodwin, a 38-year-old township resident. The sequence of events unfolded during the busy morning drop-off rush when Traffic Safety Officer David Thergesen observed Goodwin conducting what investigators described as an improper and hazardous drop-off of passengers along the roadway shoulder adjacent to the high school campus.

In an effort to maintain safe traffic flow and prevent roadside hazards, Officer Thergesen approached the vehicle on foot to address the infraction and directed Goodwin to clear the shoulder. During the course of the initial interaction, the officer observed that Goodwin was operating the vehicle without wearing his required safety seatbelt.

To conduct the motor vehicle stop safely and avoid obstructing incoming school traffic or endangering pedestrians, Thergesen instructed Goodwin to navigate his vehicle out of the roadway and pull into the nearby parking lot situated at Boland Field.

Although Goodwin initially engaged his vehicle's left turn signal, giving the appearance of full compliance with the officer's directions, he abruptly broke away from the scene instead of turning into the designated lot. The motorist accelerated aggressively onto Lanes Mill Road, speeding northbound away from the campus.

As Goodwin accelerated through the busy morning traffic corridor, his reckless maneuvers created an immediate hazard for other motorists and pedestrians. Police reported that he crossed over the center markings into oncoming traffic lanes and bypassed several other vehicles on the left side of the street.

During this evasive maneuver, Goodwin's vehicle nearly struck two uniformed school crossing guards who were stationed in the roadway. Both crossing guards had successfully brought traffic traveling in both directions to a complete standstill in order to permit students to cross the street safely.

Upon witnessing the driver nearly strike the crossing guards, Officer Thergesen promptly returned to his marked patrol cruiser to pursue the fleeing suspect. At the same time, Officer Michael Defluri, who was conducting stationary radar speed enforcement nearby, clocked Goodwin's vehicle traveling at 73 mph in the area.

The high-speed vehicular pursuit ended shortly thereafter when Goodwin turned into a residential property along Lanes Mill Road, brought his vehicle to a sudden stop, and abandoned it to flee the scene on foot into the surrounding neighborhood.

Responding police officers established a pursuit perimeter and tracked Goodwin as he ran through several adjoining backyards in the area surrounding Sawmill Road and Creek Road. The suspect attempted to elude capture by wading across a local waterway near Creek Road before running toward Greenwood Loop Road, where additional responding officers cornered and apprehended him.

Following his arrest, a standard administrative records check conducted by law enforcement revealed that Goodwin had two active, outstanding warrants for his arrest from previous matters.

Police processed Goodwin on numerous serious criminal charges resulting from the incident. The criminal complaint includes counts of eluding police, aggravated assault on a police officer, hindering apprehension, and obstructing the administration of law.

In addition to the criminal charges, officers served Goodwin with a comprehensive series of motor vehicle summonses. The traffic infractions include reckless driving, improper passing in a no-passing zone, failure to comply with the lawful direction of a police officer, failure to obey a police officer directing traffic, and failure to stop for a school crossing guard’s whistle, among several other statutory violations.

Following his booking and processing on the charges, Goodwin was transferred to the Ocean County Jail, where he is currently being detained pending upcoming court appearances.

Police spokesperson Officer Victoria Finelli emphasized that the incident took place while department personnel were actively conducting specialized traffic safety enforcement within designated school zones to safeguard students, educational staff, crossing personnel, and the driving public.

The aggressive enforcement measures follow an earlier tragedy that deeply affected the local school community. On May 19, 15-year-old Jackson Mueller was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash while riding his bicycle to Brick Memorial High School. Although authorities emphasized that the two incidents are entirely unrelated, Finelli reiterated that the prior fatality stands as a solemn reminder of the devastating consequences associated with reckless and unsafe driving in school corridors.
