Decades After Surviving 9/11 and Carrying Woman to Safety, Raleigh Man Shares Life Lessons on Resilience and Service

More than two decades after escaping the World Trade Center during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Raleigh resident John Cerqueira is sharing his reflections on how that harrowing morning permanently altered his perspective on life. In an interview with ABC11 anchor Steve Daniels, Cerqueira spoke from his home in North Carolina about his survival, his heroic evacuation efforts, and the mental frameworks that have sustained him in the years since.

At the time of the attacks, Cerqueira was a 22-year-old young professional just beginning his adult life in New York City. Having recently graduated from North Carolina State University, he was only a few months into his very first post-collegiate job when the catastrophic events of that Tuesday morning suddenly unfolded.

Cerqueira was working on the 81st floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower when American Airlines Flight 11 slammed into the building at 8:46 a.m. The sudden, violent impact sent shockwaves through the upper floors of the skyscraper, forcing everyone inside to confront an immediate and unprecedented struggle for survival as they attempted to evacuate downward through smoke-filled stairwells.

During his descent, Cerqueira reached the 68th floor, where he encountered a woman in a wheelchair who was unable to escape on her own. Choosing to assist rather than rush ahead, he joined efforts to physically carry the woman down dozens of flights of stairs, successfully delivering her to safety before the tower fell.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Cerqueira's selfless actions drew widespread public attention. He was celebrated across the country as a hero, earning media coverage that included a feature in People magazine and an appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." Despite the sudden national spotlight, Cerqueira remained focused on processing the profound reality of what he had witnessed and experienced.

Looking back on the tragedy today, Cerqueira admitted that the sheer scale of the event remains difficult to fully comprehend. He noted that while thoughts of Sept. 11 are not necessarily at the front of his mind every single day, the memories inevitably resurface with greater intensity as each anniversary approaches in September.

Cerqueira shared that specific environmental triggers can still instantly bring back vivid sensory memories of that catastrophic morning. In particular, distinct scents such as the smell of pulverized concrete, lingering dust, and burning debris continue to remind him of the North Tower's interior during the evacuation.

Similarly, loud industrial noises can evoke deep visceral reactions. Cerqueira noted that the auditory and physical sensations of heavy construction sites—particularly the sound and vibration of large structural beams being loaded and dropped—routinely take him back to the overwhelming environment of lower Manhattan on that fateful day.

To cope with the lasting emotional and psychological toll of surviving a national tragedy, Cerqueira has devoted considerable effort to actively managing his trauma. Over the years, he has incorporated a range of healthy habits into his lifestyle, placing a heavy emphasis on proactive mental health care, balanced nutrition, and regular physical exercise.

He has also embraced daily mindfulness and meditation practices to help maintain his emotional balance. By intentionally cultivating an awareness of the mind-body connection, Cerqueira explained that he has developed far better tools to honor his physical well-being while navigating the lingering psychological weight of the disaster.

When asked by Daniels what broader takeaways others might glean from his journey, Cerqueira identified three central pillars that have come to define his life philosophy: gratitude, service, and optimism about what lies ahead. He described this three-part outlook as embracing an "abundance mindset" rather than succumbing to fear or despair.

Cerqueira explained that surviving the disaster instilled in him an enduring desire to help others, turning his sense of appreciation into an ongoing personal obligation to be of meaningful service to his community. Seeking out positive perspectives has become an essential daily discipline.

Highlighting the psychological value of gratitude, Cerqueira pointed out that thankful reflection serves as an effective antidote to anxiety and distress during turbulent times. In his view, it is nearly impossible for an individual to experience genuine gratitude and paralyzing fear simultaneously, making appreciation a powerful tool for overcoming life's inevitable hardships.

Today, Cerqueira leads a full life in Raleigh with his family, including his wife and their high school-aged daughter. Professionally, he works in corporate training and consulting, where he integrates the enduring principles forged during his Sept. 11 survival into leadership development programs for business executives.
