Coastal Showers to Shift Inland as Jacksonville Endures Scorching Summer Weather

Jacksonville is bracing for a series of weather events that promise to keep residents on their toes this week. The National Weather Service has issued a warning for potential heavy downpours, with a pattern of morning coastal showers and afternoon inland storms expected throughout the week.

According to the First Alert Weather Team at Action News Jax, the morning of August 31st will see partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the 70s. However, as the day progresses, a few showers over the Atlantic are expected to come onshore, bringing with them heavy downpours to coastal counties. By afternoon, the rain is forecasted to move inland, past Highway 301, and toward I-75, where additional rounds of heavy rain, frequent lightning, and gusty winds are anticipated.

Despite the wet forecast, the I-95 corridor is expected to enjoy a lot of dry hours this afternoon. The weather pattern is expected to persist throughout much of the week, with a few coastal showers in the morning followed by inland storms in the afternoon. Beachgoers should be aware of an elevated risk of rip currents due to onshore winds.

Temperatures are set to soar each afternoon, with the beaches experiencing temperatures in the 80s and inland areas reaching low to middle 90s. This heatwave is part of a broader trend this year, with 96 days at or above 90 degrees, placing 2026 in 12th place on the list of years with the most 90-degree days. The city is on track to rise into the "Top 10" this week.

The tropics have also been active, with Invest 97L offshore Louisiana likely to become a tropical depression or tropical storm by the end of the day. This small and compact system is known for its quick strengthening and weakening. Hurricane hunters are scheduled to fly into the system this morning to monitor its development.

The next named storm will be Edouard. Meanwhile, the remnants of Dolly, now a tropical wave, are bringing beneficial rains to Puerto Rico. This moisture is expected to approach Florida later this week, but there are no indications of re-development at this time.

Looking ahead, the weather forecast calls for a few morning coastal showers each day through the weekend, with hot afternoons and scattered showers and thunderstorms. The high temperatures are expected to hover around 91 degrees, while overnight lows will be in the mid-70s.

Jacksonville residents are encouraged to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and to take necessary precautions during this active weather period. The First Alert Weather Team will continue to provide updates and forecasts, ensuring that residents are well-informed and prepared for the changing conditions.

For those interested in following the weather closely, Action News Jax offers a variety of tools and resources, including an interactive radar and a podcast featuring meteorologist Mike Buresh. The Allergy Tracker is also available for those who are sensitive to pollen counts.

As the city endures this scorching summer, it's a reminder of the importance of weather preparedness and the resilience of its residents. With the right information and precautions, Jacksonville can navigate through the challenging weather conditions that lie ahead.
